The Mandalorian: Chapter 5: The Gunslinger

The Mandalorian: Chapter 5: The Gunslinger is the latest chapter into the Mandalorian Disney Plus TV series and was directed by Dave Filoni. The episode focuses on The Mandalorian having to make an emergency landing after sustaining damage in a fire fight and having to take a bounty hunter job to be able to pay for the repairs to his ship.

Let's get straight to the point currently Chapter 5: The Gunslinger is probably the weakest episode of the series so far (I have only seen up to Chapter 5 so far). The episode personally feels like a filler in between episode that doesn't really drive the overall narrative forward in any way that effects the overall narrative in any way, sure this episode is a great way to see The Mandalorian on a bounty hunter job using his skills and knowledge to help the rookie bounty hunter out but currently doesn't feel like this epsidoe is going to add anything to the overall narrative moving forward.

The element that really stands out in this epsidoe is the nostalgia feeling you get when watching the episode from arriving at Mos Eisley, to visiting the famous cantina where the bounty hunter is sat where Han Solo sits in Star Wars Episode 4: A New Hope, to Tuskin Raiders and Dewbacks, it honestly just made me geek out so much and any true Star Wars fan will spot all these references any truly love them all, and that is down to Dave Filoni whose love of the franchise really shines in this episode and I am so glad he is getting experience directing live action Star Wars after his excellent work on Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated TV series.

Whilst the nostalgia element of the episode really saves the overall episode it really can't detract that the episode feels wasted and really realise on nostalgia to carry it over the finishing line. The additional characters don't exactly add a lot to the episode with the new unexperienced bounty hunter becoming more irritating rather than a threating or cunning enemy to The Mandalorian in any way and the end conflict standoff is really over before it ever really begins which is such a shame after such stunning final act conflicts in previous episodes, but on the plus side The Child (Baby Yoda) is still extremely cute and seeing The Mandalorian in action is always exciting.

Overall, this is an average episode at the best and is basically just a filler episode with no real impact but hey its new Star Wars and any new Star Wars content is good with me. Hopefully Chapter 6 will improve on Chapter 5 and put the Mandalorian back on track.

Verdict: 3 / 5 stars
