Lady and the Tramp Review

"Every day could be an adventure"

Lady and the Tramp is the latest live action reboot of the classic Disney film to be released by Disney this time instead of being released in cinema's, this version of Lady and the Tramp was released on the streaming service Disney Plus. The newest version of Lady and the Tramp was directed by Charlie Bean and stars the likes of Tessa Thompson, Justin Theroux, Sam Elliott, Ashley Jensen, Thomas Mann and Kiersey Clemons, and follows the romantic tale of a sheltered uptown Lady and the streetwise Tramp.

The original Lady and the Tramp is without a doubt an instant family classic film that will stand the test of time, this newest interpretation whilst not meeting the heights set by the original film is a sweet updated telling of the classic story but does have its flaws.

One of the biggest differences with the latest version of Lady and the Tramp is of course the use of CGI to bring the characters to life and the mix of live action and CGI works really well in this film, and whilst the CGI when the dogs are talking might not be the smoothest at times, it is mostly done really well and helps to capture the spirit of the original film. There were a lot of new additions to this film and changes and whilst personally some work and others fall flat, what I really enjoyed was the expanded role of Jim Dear (Thomas Mann) and Darling (Kiersey Clemons) and that really gave some more heart to the film and their love for Lady and eventually the Tramp.

The film itself is very sweet and will be an instant hit with families and all those Disney fans out there, but if I had to pick between the classic film and the latest Lady and the Tramp film then it would have to be the classic film. This film has the tricky task just like The Lion King off keeping the overriding story of the classic film whilst trying to keep things fresh and exciting but for me personally the majority of the new additions just fell flat. One example would be the new songs added for example the new version of the Siamese Cat Song doesn't work nearly as well as the classic song and their involvement feels very forced and rushed during their only scene in the film, and even additional changes to characters really takes away from what they previously where during the classic film as well. I am all down for making changes and updating previous films for a new generation, but this remake certainly falls below expectations.

Overall The Lady and the Tramp is a sweet and entertaining film to watch and families will love this film, but for me it doesn't compete with the classic film, and I would highly recommend re-watching the classic film after you watch the new one to spot the differences and make up your own mind over which version you prefer. If remaking classic Disney films bring the films to a new audience and generation then I am all for it but they really need to work hard to understand why the original is loved so much and try and recreate the magic we all felt watching the original films.
