Loki Episode 5: Journey Into Mystery Review

THIS POST CONTAINS SPOILERS

With the finale of the third Marvel Disney + series approaching it can be said that Loki overall has been a strong series and after a strong start has got stronger as the series has progressed which has largely introduced the MCU to the possibilities of the multiverse and Episode 5: “Journey into Mystery” continues to explore the concept of the multiverse in a huge way.

At the end of Episode 4: “The Nexus Event” we are introduced to four brand new Loki variants and whilst Episode 5 further explores the four new variants it also introduces us to lots of different variants (although these are less explored throughout the episode). The four new variants include a classic Loki, Kid Loki, Boastful Loki and an Alligator Loki (which was fun to see). The inclusion of these Loki’s was great to see and it was enjoyable watching the characters essential bounce off each other and explore their nexus events including Kid Loki killing Thor (much to the surprise of our Loki) and Classic Loki surviving his meeting with Thanos in their version of Avengers: Infinity War and going into hiding only to miss his brother and trying to return which caused his nexus event. It has to be said that even though Tom Hiddleston as Loki and Sophia Di Martino as Sylvie still give good performances it is Richard E Grant as Classic Loki that really stands out (not just costume wise) and would love to see more of him (although he perishes at the hands of Alioth, but with the God of mischief anything is possible).

The episode itself is a visual treat with the episode being set in a void world where variants go after they have been pruned by the TVA and essentially finally killed by Alioth. Even though this void world is bleak it is packed full of MCU references, from a destroyed New York to the Thanos copter (taken straight out of the comics) and a reference to and introduction of Throg (a frog version of Thor), but it is during the final confrontation with Alioth that the episode shines visually with a CGI feast of Classic Loki creating an illusion of Asgard so powerful that it managers to grab the attention and fool Alioth allowing Loki and Sylvie to enchant Alioth to escape from this void world only to be presented with a castle in the distance that might hold the key to the origin of the TVA and to finally reveal the mastermind behind the whole thing. Could we finally get the introduction of Kang the Conqueror or is the mastermind a more powerful variant of Loki we will have to wait and see in the finale and who knows maybe there is a season 2 on the cards, but we will have to wait and see.

Overall episode 5 “Journey into Mystery expands the MCU introduction to the Multiverse in a big way and introduces us to an array of great variants of Loki which hopefully we will see more of in the finale. The finale itself has a big job on its hand with the big question of who is behind the TVA and the Time Keepers still to be answered, but if the series is anything to go by then I am sure the finale will not disappoint either.

Verdict: 4 / 5 Stars
