The Falcon and The Winter Soldier Episode 5 "Truth" Review

THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS

With the final episode premiering on Disney+ this Friday Episode 5 “Truth” not only continues the action that we have previously seen in previous episodes of the series so far but actually takes a step back to tie up some lose ends and focus on character development moments.

The episode starts just after the events of the end of Episode 4 with Sam and Bucky confronting Walker into returning the shield after his brutal murder of one of the Flag Smashers, obviously with the serum flowing through Walkers veins this doesn’t go as planned with Sam and Bucky having to remove the shield by force leading to an edge of your seat action set piece resulting in Sam and Bucky in possession of the shield once more.

With previous episodes building up to more action Episode 5 takes a step back and focuses on Sam coming to terms with the realisation that he needs to step up and take up the mantle of Captain America, with visits to Isaiah Bradley to explore more about his history imprisoned after his involvement in the super solider program and a return home visit for Sam with Bucky we get some interesting character development moments during the fixing of Sam’s family fishing boat. The most interesting moments come in a scene where Sam is training with the shield. Sam helping Bucky to come to terms with his past is definitely a standout moment in the series and with Bucky coming to terms and understanding as to why Sam gave up the shield towards the beginning of the series. This moment really shows how far the two characters have come over the series and leaves them on a level playing field and mutual understanding on there own personally situations as we move into the finale of the series.

At the start of the series we were also teased that there would be a big cameo appearance in episode 5 and whilst it wasn’t exactly what some fans were expecting the introduction of Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine who has in the past taken the mantle of Madam Hydra in the comics portrayed by Julia Louis-Dreyfus is certainly an exciting inclusion into the MCU and with her meeting with Walker trying to enlist him could this be leading to a more villainous team up down the line or the creation of the Thunderbolts, this could be a very interesting position that the MCU is heading in. It will also be interesting to see how much of an involvement she has moving forward and what future projects she could be appearing in.

Overall Episode 5 delivers an action-packed start but also slows down in pace to deliver some truly great character-building moments. With some stories tied up such as Zemo being taken to the raft prison it will be interesting to see how the series concludes and find out what is in that suitcase, my hopes lie on a new Captain America suit for Sam close to its comic appearance.

Verdict: 4 / 5 stars
