Loki Episode 3: Lamentis Review

THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS

The end of episode two introduced the character of Sylvie to the Disney + series and episode 3: Lamentis, picks up straight after the events of episode 2 with Loki following Sylvie through the time gate and after a brief scuffle in the TVA they escape to Lamentis a doomed moon that just happens to have a planet crashing into it. What in tales next is an episode dedicated to developing the character of Sylvie and her interactions with Loki set against the backdrop of a doomsday level event.

Whilst episode 3 might be slower in pace than its previous two episodes it sure does allow for character development which is clearly shown during the third episode of the series. Sylvie portrayed in the series by Sophie Di Martino works well off Tom Hiddleston’s portrayal of Loki and a sense of competitiveness is seen through out the episode with Loki trying to prove that he is by far the superior version of Loki and whilst Loki is more about tricks and illusion, Sylvie differs with a more direct approach. There are some great dialogue sequences further exploring some elements of the back story of both characters and with three episodes to go I am sure we will get some further detailed exploration of Sylvie as a character and how she got entangled with the TVA.

Whilst at times episode 3 takes a breather and focuses on the connection between the two characters we do get a real sense of impending peril in the form of the planet crashing into Lamentis which is prominent throughout the episode but it’s the final moments of the episode that really captures this impending doom with a clever one shot tracking Loki and Sylvie trying to make there way to an escape ship about to launch. The one shot was a clever sequence allowing to show the chaos surrounding Loki and Sylvie and really immerses you as an audience member into the situation. During this sequence Loki manages to stop a falling building and reverse it to its original state, now is this a demonstration of Loki’s powers or did a certain trickster God of mischief steal the time stone from the TVA and use it in that moment to save him and Sylvie…well we are going to have to wait and find out.

It is also worth mentioning that even though the sacred timeline was bombed during the events of the second episode the TVA is hardly in the third episode of the series. We do get a brief sequence during the opening moments of the episode with Loki and Sylvie entering the TVA and quickly exiting after being spotted by the TVA but apart from that there is no presence from the TVA at all, now I am sure that will change with episode 4 and hopefully we get some more detailed explanation as to why Sylvie wants to over through the TVA as it really wasn’t covered much in this episode.

Overall a slower episode to begin with which offers strong character development sequences that leads to an action packed impending doom for Loki and Sylvie, it will be interesting to see how they both manage to get out of this situation but my money is on the TVA having something to do with it.

Verdict: 4 / 5 stars
