Maleficent: Mistress of Evil Review
"There are many who pray on the innocent. I'm sure your kind would agree!"
Maleficent: Mistress of Evil was directed by Joachim Ronning and is a sequel to Maleficent which was released back in 2014. The film stars the likes of Angelina Jolie, Elle Fanning, Harris Dickinson, Michelle Pfeiffer, Sam Riley, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Robert Lindsey. The film follows Maleficent and her goddaughter Aurora as they begin to question their complex relationship as they are pulled in different directions by Aurora pending wedding.
When they announced that there was going to be a sequel to Maleficent I was sceptical to say the least but after watching it I can honestly say that I was pleasantly surprised. Maleficent: Mistress of Evil not only builds on the original film and devlops and expands on the core relationships established in the original film but expands on the lore surrounding Maleficient. Whilst this film isn't the most complex sequel it sure makes up for it in sheer visual scope and even though this film is CGI heavy it really makes a beautiful visual presence one that really captures the magic that surrounds Disney films. Angelina Jolie continues to give a good performance as Maleficent but it is the added addition of Sam Riley and Chiwetel Ejiofor that really allow Angelina Jolie to give a much more developed and three dimensional performance as she battles hew own demons.
Is Maleficient: Mistress of Evil a necessary sequel? not really but it does develop on the previous film and adds an extra layer of depth to the characters whilst deviliering a visual treat for Disney fans. If you are a Disney fan and a fan of the original film then I am sure you will love this film just as much as you enjoyed the original film.
Verdict: 4 / 5 Stars
