Fantastic Four Review

"There is no Victor ..... only Doom!"

The Fantastic Four are back and rebooted in Josh Tranks latest film, starring Miles Teller as Reed Richards (Mr Fantastic), Michael B Jordan as Johnny Storm (The Human Torch), Kate Mara as Sue Storm (The Invisible Woman) and Jamie Bell as Ben Grimm (The Thing).

Lets just start off by saying this film is not as fantastic as the title suggests. There are positive aspects to the film (not as many as I would of hoped!) including its strong cast who portray a younger set of characters, much younger than we have seen in the previous incarnation of the Fantastic Four (and I mean much younger). Victor Von Doom played by Toby Kebbell brings out Dooms intimating side (when he finally makes his appearance after being forgot about!), especially in one sequence where he breaks out of a high secure facility (defiantly a stand out moment). One aspect of the CGI which really stands out was for The Thing, this is probably the best visual version of The Thing we have seen and is the most accurate version compared to the comics version of The Thing.

On the other hand the characters didn't feel like the Fantastic Four that we have come to expect and only really start to feel like the actual family and team in the last sequence of the film (I know its a reboot but they need to feel like the family). The majority of the film feels really slow, there is alot of time spent introducing the characters (not necessarily a bad thing) but as soon as the characters get there powers the pace shifts and you end up with the film feeling rushed as they try to show you what the characters can do before throwing them together to stop Doom in the climax, which honestly is over before it ever really begins (yeah it goes by that quick!). The film needed more time with the characters developing there powers and coming to terms with there new abilities and also coming together as not just a team but a family, before even thinking of taken on Doom in the climatic sequence. This is certainly not up to the standard that we have come to expect from the superhero genre as a whole. if they are lucky enough to get the green light on a sequel, then they have alot of work to do (and I mean alot).

P.S. Make sure you listen out for those famous catch phases that get used (rarely) during the film (you know the ones!)

Verdict: 2 out of 5
