Ant-Man and the Wasp Review

"I do some dumb things, and the people I love the most - they pay the price!"

Its Marvel time again! What a year for Marvel films!

Ant-Man and the Wasp is the latest entry into the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) and is the sequal to Ant-Man from 2015. The film was directed by Peyton Reed, and stars the likes of Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, Michael Pena, Michael Douglas, Michelle Pfeiffer, Lawrence Fishburne, Walton Goggins, T.I, David Dastmalchian and Hannah John-Kamen. The film is set in the time between Civil War and Infinity War and follows Scott Lang as he balances being both Ant-Man and a father whilst under house arrest. Hope Van Dyne and Dr Hank Pym present an urgent new mission to help find Hope and Dr Pym's with a mission that finds Scott/ Ant-Man teaming up with the Wasp (Hope) to uncover secrets from the past.

When Ant-Man was originally released back in 2015 it was considered by many to be a risky film for Marvel to make, but went down really well with critics and audiences alike, and the character of Ant-Man became a fan favourite character in the MCU with all ages. So when they announced Ant-Man and the Wasp, the sequel to Ant-Man (practically announced as they released the original film!) I was extremely excited. Well the big question is does Ant-Man and the Wasp deliver?..... and the answer is YES. Ant-Man and the Wasp is definitely a good and enjoyable film, which in my opinion is on par with the original film, but is not without its faults.

After the emotional roller coaster of the ride that was Avengers: Infinity War, it was really nice to have a film that didn't take its self too seriously and wanted to have a bit of fun, compared to the high stakes drama we got in Avengers: Infinity War, and that what Ant-Man and the Wasp is, its a lot of fun and laughter. All the actors give great performances, and it seems Paul Rudd is having the time of his life playing Scott Lang/ Ant-Man and just oozes charm and comedic timing. But move over Ant-Man theres a new star of the show and that's Wasp. Evangeline Lilly absolutely kills it as The Wasp, and has some really clever and entertaining action sequences, and without a doubt will become a fan favourite character (think of the character interactions we could get moving forward!). The action sequences are also great, with some very clever uses of the shrinking tech (Pym Particles), and some really stunning CGI sequences involving the mind boggling and at times psychedelic Quantum Realm. One of the strongest elements from the first film was the comedy, and without a doubt Ant-Man and the Wasp takes the comedy from the first film and builds on it, delivering some truly funny and entertaining moments.

Whilst there was a lot about Ant-Man and the Wasps that I really enjoyed (come on I am a Marvel fan, I love everything Marvel) there were some elements that did not quite hit the mark for me. One of my biggest problems in the film was some of the editing structure and the pace of the film. For me personally the film just seemed a little rushed in places, and could have been a bit longer in terms of run time. The fast paced pace of the film meant that at times some of cuts between shots were a little off and at times in a scene the shots would jump around a little too much, with many different angles, which for me at least was a little noticeable and a bit distracting at times (not necessarily a major thing though). Also the film has so much comedy in it, that some of the jokes are of course going to fall flat, and there were a couple of moments in the film, where some of the jokes didn't land.

Overall if you are a Marvel fan then you will absolutely love Ant-Man and the Wasp just like I did. It is a very smartly placed film, in terms of coming out just after Avengers: Infinity War and really cleanses the pallet for what is to come next year in terms of Avengers 4. The film is fun and entertaining and a highly enjoyable summer and Marvel film.

P.S make sure you stay for those post credit sequences! That first one wow just wow, that is all I am going to say.

Verdict: 4 out of 5 stars
